Laila Abdullah joined Voices of Resistance hosts Opollo and Barbara to talk about Palestine–the genocide, the West Bank land theft and more. Laila, a Palestinian woman from Savannah, had recently returned from a trip to visit family in the West Bank. She is passionate about her connection to the land of Palestine and conveys that as she speaks of her visit. She was able to travel to Palestine, at great risk, and spoke of the incredible difficulty and humiliation faced by Palestinians to travel, particularly to Jerusalem, where she visited and prayed at Al Asqa, at great risk to herself.
In addition to talking about her trip to the West Bank, we also spoke of Your Space Collective (YSC), a project born of her passion to promote a free Palestine but also to provide a welcome place and mutual aid to all who come to YSC. Now located at 902 West 36th Street, the Collective houses a bookstore with many items brought back by Laila from Palestine, and spaces for a variety of uses. An open house for this incredible space was held on August 15. Members of the public are welcomed to become members of Your Space Collective; benefits include member-only events, discounts, and use of the various spaces. Currently, Your Space is registering people to vote on Mondays and Fridays. Planning is also underway for the second annual 5K walk/run in Savannah to be held on 10/10/2026. The next Voices of Resistance on 9/1 welcomes Jamie Muhammad, VP of ILA 1414 to talk about the real labor day, May 1, not the holiday coming up this year on September 7, and how and why we need to bring back strong unions to fight for a living wage, worker safety and benefits, and more. On 9/8, Voices of Resistance welcomes Tharros Director Kate Gallup and friend of the show Kevin O’Brien, to talk about human trafficking, especially in a port city, and how we can be advocates and allies of those trafficked to Savannah and elsewhere in SE coastal Georgia.
